june 29 – july 04

so originally june 30-july 8 we (me, miyagi, my grams and my mom) were suppose to go to buffalo & then rhode island to visit family & friends but the night before we were leaving, my grandmother got sick and ended up back in the hospital for a few days…. so between the hospital, my mom visiting & the fact that we were SUPPOSE to be on vacation, i haven’t been eating normal or cooking much. so i’ve condensed the past few days june 29- today july 4 into one post. :o)

angelica’s kitchen i let my mom pick out a place from my vegan nyc book… she picked angelica kitchen which was fine with me since i’d never been. i love trying new places! so a quick train ride / subway / walk we arrived at the restaurant. there was a small wait and we realized we needed cash (WHO DOESN’T ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS THESE DAYS???) anyway when we returned from the atm, we were seated promptly. the menu reminded me a lot of alicia silverstone’s book the kind diet…. many macrobiotic dishes with elements of sea vegetables. i was slightly disappointed because i felt like pigging out on junk food, but that’s okay. i ordered the special appetizer:

special appetizer

agrarian salgado
baked rounds of mashed yukon gold potatoes and herbed seitan, with a basil-walnut pesto center; topped with dill-tofu sour cream & garnished with piquant marinated kale.

for the entree i went for a mexican dish:

olé man seitan
homemade seitan & roasted vegetable mix folded into a warm
whole wheat tortilla; dressed with spicy traditional mole sauce
(peanuts & chocolate), & lime-jalapeño tofu sour cream;
garnished with pimento.

and for dessert we had to try two things! i couldn’t pick just one. my mom picked the apple pie… and i opted for the parfait style dessert (which is unfortunately not listed on the menu so i have no idea what it was called…)  it had apple / cinnamon flavor to it and it reminded me of pudding. 😀 i also ordered a strawberry lemon poppy seed muffin to go (you know, for breakfast!) 😉

wild ginger (bronxville)

i could eat vegetable sushi every day of my life and not get tired of it. i LOVE sushi. i keep going back to wild ginger even though there are tons of other sushi places around… i guess they are doing something right! 😉 i only ordered two rolls. my new york favorite, the peanut avocado roll…

nom nom nom

and tried the greenpeace roll. it sounded interesting and ended up being pretty delicious! 😀 score!

the greenpeace roll had mango, avocado, cucumber, asparagus, sweet pepper, lettuce, special sauce and topped with kiwi! YUM.

my only complaint about wild ginger is that the wait staff doesn’t know the answer to any of my questions. i wanted to know what ingredients are in the salad  dressings…. he had to ask. i feel like EVERY server and EVERY restaurant should know what they are serving…. or at least be able to find out for sure (by computer system or menu?) this is my biggest complaint about eating at non-vegan restaurants. i HATE having to ask questions and rely on servers to make sure they aren’t poisoning me with animal products. 😦 i remember working amongst servers at the cheesecake factory that worked there for yearsssss and served black beans to a vegetarian. THEY HAVE MEAT IN THEM. that’s the kind of stuff that makes me weary of eating out. you can’t trust your server. unless you are in a VEGAN friendly restaurant that takes precautions & educates the employees!  </rant>

on saturday morning i made pancakes for my mom. picked some raspberries off the bushes in the garden… and added some vegan chocolate chips! yum. my all time favorite flavor combination! chocolates & raspberries! 😀

my morning consisted of.....

mom liked the pancakes and couldn’t taste the “vegan” difference. 😀 i love that. i also made some tofu scramble two or three nights before and she liked it. yay!

kate’s joint i’ve read mixed reviews but you know me, i never go by other peoples opinions. i like to try things myself. same goes for movies. everyone has different tastes! going in i already had a chip on my shoulder because i know it’s hipster central…. but ignored the red flannel wearing, bearded, intellectuals and concentrated on the menu. i was there for brunch so of course i ordered brunch food. the fresh squeezed oj was AMAZING. like the freshest most yummiest orange juice i’ve ever tasted (or maybe i was just thirsty?!?!?)

brunch at kate's joint

wow! i ordered the sweet potato hash and it was pretty delicious. it was topped with tofu scramble and had fakn bacon and melty daiya (i think) deliciousness. it was pretty darn good! the menu didn’t seem as exciting as foodswings… i’d probably venture down to brooklyn instead of heading back to LES for kates. but the oj was delicious….

so i haven’t been cooking much at home. i had some tofurky “cold cuts” and tempeh bacon for my road trip to buffalo… so i’ve been eating tofurky sammies on rye bread…. i had a vegan “turkey” salad wrap at mrs greens…. i grabbed some chipotle while heading home from nyc a few nights ago…. i had some white wine and crudites at a friends house in hoboken… and devoured a lot of leftovers earlier in the week. nothing exciting going on over here….but… i’m going somewhere i’ve never been…. C H I C A G O here i come! i’m so excited for my friend rachel to show me all that chicago has to offer for vegans! yay! looking forward to friday & saturday! don’t expect too much until then! 😉
