well i’m here. home. the bay. the place my heart feels most at home. i am in love with california. the scenery. the weather. the people. the food. all of it.
i arrived super late last night. had some kind bars, trail mix, a banana and hot tea on the plane. nothing exciting. this morning i started out with a soy latte… and we went to whole foods for lunch during our busy day ((wedding in yosemite this weekend so we were busy preparing))
so i didn’t feel like salad bar so i opted for a beyond chicken sammy… some asian slaw… and an evolution juice (which we don’t have back in florida). i surprised (an unhappy & dieting friend) with some vegan donuts for dessert. i had to. they were calling me to the bakery case. florida whole foods does carry vegan donuts… but they are lacking. always stale. never as good as the posh bakery whole foods donuts in the bay area. (or pepples for that matter). mmmm. i use to go through a 6 pack of these donuts in 24 hours. NOT HEALTHY. sometimes i wonder if i’m better off not living in the bay. with places like cinnaholic, pepples and so many other yummy vegan bakeries and such… it’s very dangerous for a sugar addict like myself. luckily i only ate one and we walked most of it off i’m sure… shopping!
for dinner we met a friend in concord at a local sushi place. i ordered 3 veggie rolls and we all split some edamame. (i’m dining with two NON veggies).
i ordered a sweet potato tempura roll, an asparagus roll and an asparagus with avocado roll. they were all super delish. (still can’t wait to go to cha ya though – man do i miss that soba noodle salad. mmmmmm) so eating with non veggie friends in cali isn’t so bad when you have so many places with vegan options.
my friend also introduced me to a popular sandwich place – which i’m now dying to try called ike’s. their menu is insane and all of the veggie sammies are able to convert vegan if necessary (per the menu). so really i don’t have to freak out when going out with non vegans for lunch or dinner. i love that. takes so much stress off of me. the bay is so much more evolved with food knowledge. if i say “vegan” in florida, half of the people i’m talking to have no clue what vegan even is. it’s weird for me after living in the bay and then new york city for several years.
tomorrow we’re road tripping to yosemite for our friends wedding. i have NO idea what the food options will be for me en route or in the park so i’m bringing some staples with me so i don’t starve.
not pictured: green grapes, kind bars, trail mix and h2o. i will be having a vegan dinner at the wedding thanks to the lovely bride. her sister is also veggie and apparently there are FOUR vegans attending the wedding. yay! as long as i find coffee every morning i think i’m covered.
next blog post will most likely be saturday when i’m back in oakland and my vegancation begins.
